French

Coordinator – Mrs. Griffiths

French is introduced in Prep 1 and is also taught to Prep 2, 3 and 4 for one lesson a week.
The aims and objectives of learning a modern foreign language in the Preparatory School are:

  1. To foster an interest in learning another language;
  2. To introduce children to another language in a way that is enjoyable and fun;
  3. To help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries;
  4. To develop their speaking and listening skills;
  5. To lay the foundations for future study.
The curriculum followed is based on the guidance given in the National Curriculum. The children are taught to know and understand how to :

  1. Ask and answer questions;
  2. Use correct pronunciation and intonation;
  3. Memorise words;
  4. Interpret meaning;
  5. Understand basic grammar;
  6. Work in pairs and groups, and communicate in French;
  7. Look at life in another culture.

A variety of techniques are used to encourage the children to have an active engagement in the language: these include games, role-play and songs. The lessons are made as entertaining and enjoyable as possible as this approach serves to develop a positive attitude in the children to the learning of modern foreign languages.
